Georgia – from ancient world to XXI century

Today I’m going to give some information about Georgia. At first I want to tell something about the name. According to the ancient Georgian Chronicles, the ancestor of Georgian people was Kartlos, the great grandson of the Biblical Japheth. Because of his name we are called “Kartvelebi” and our country – “Sakartvelo”.

Georgia is located in the Caucasus region at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. it is bounded to the west by the Black Sea, to the north by Russia, to the southwest by Turkey, to the south byArmenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan. Georgia covers a territory of 69,700 km² and its population is almost 4.7 million. During the classical era independent kingdoms became established in what is now Georgia. The kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia adopted Christianity in the early 4th century. A unified Georgia reached the peak of its political and economic strength during the reign of King David IV the Builder and Queen Tamar in the 11th–12th centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century, Georgia was annexed by the Russian Empire. After a brief period of independence following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Georgia was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1921. After independence in 1991,  Georgia suffered from economic crisis for most of the 1990s. This lasted until the Rose Revolution of 2003, after which the new government introduced democratic and economic reforms.

I have tried to introduce you to Georgian history in two words. It is not easy because life of Georgian people began 1,8 million years ago. For centuries we live on our lovely land, fight for it, believe in god,  give warmness and love to each other, sing, dance, joke, meet guests with open door and open heart. It’s life of every Georgian from ancient period till today. We will talk about Georgian history, people, culture – about Georgia later too. If you are interested in this sunny country, just wait a little. I will help you to discover Georgia : ) Sakartvelo is waiting for friends!
